Leopard II Main Battle Tank

The Leopard 2 is a German main battle tank developed by Krauss-Maffei in the early 1970s and first entering service in 1979. The Leopard 2 replaced the earlier Leopard 1 as the foremost MBT in the German Army. Various versions have served in the armed forces of Germany and ten other European countries, as well as non-European nations. More than 3480 Leopard 2s have been manufactured. There are two main development batches of the tank, the original models up to Leopard 2A4 which have vertically-faced turret armour, and the “improved” batch, namely the Leopard 2A5 and newer versions, which have angled arrow-shaped turret appliqué armour together with a number of other improvements. All models feature digital fire control systems with laser rangefinders, a fully stabilized main gun and coaxial machine gun and advanced night vision and sighting equipment (first vehicles used a low-light level TV system or LLLTV; thermal imaging was introduced later on). The tank has the ability to engage moving targets while moving over rough terrain. It can drive through water 4 meters (13 ft) deep using a snorkel or 1.2 meters (3.9 ft) without any preparation and climb vertical obstacles over one metre high. The tank is powered with a turbo-charged multi-fuel V12 diesel engine that produces 1500 PS (1479 hp, 1103 kW).

    BUT – BULLSHIT

a2a1ha*abrams is so much better -.-

    * heavy armored

  9. Rightleggedleftback says:

    err… isn’t it M1a2? whats a a2a1ha?

Anyways, Abrams is a good tank, but more armour doesn’t mean is a better tank. I reckon one would have the best crew survival in a Merkava IV.

The best tank have the most optimal combination of firepower, armour & speed.

Also, I reckon leo 2 has better maintenance record than the Abrams. Thats why is exported to more countries than the Abrams.

    Just my 2 1/2 cents.

ya know why its less importet, because the us would never give this technology to another country…

the leo has never been in a serious battle o.o

c’man, the ha (heavy armor) version is now better protectet but still same speed…

in combination with bradley tanks and appachies they can invate citys in hours

    best example: falluja

  18. rexy004 says:

@88ABRAMS88 thats just silly, there is no tech in the abrahams other nations dont have, and if you say less imported then this means they would share tech with some nations. appart from that the abrahams is using the german cannon. is the US to stupid to prudice their own cannons?

  19. 88ABRAMS88 says:

  20. BHeroF says:

Tanks aren´t that important in military role anymore, in future I think there´ll be only Robots xD but Leopard 2 is better than 10 Abrams.

    lol old technology from 98

  24. BitnikGr says:

@88ABRAMS88 Technologies like what? Chobcham-1 armor – British. Cannon – German. ATGM “Lahat” – Israeli (not in service yet). Hard kill “Iron Fist” – Israeli (not in service yet). Only GPS is pure American patent… but my car has it too.
Abrams is less exported tank because of its gas-turbine engine.
There are countries which want to buy Abrams (like Turkey and Australia), but only under one condition. Gas-turbine engine must be changed to diesel.
